Dynamic UPS

UPS systems that store energy in flywheels represent a real alternative to batteries. The Active Power company has adopted and improved this approach for the Cleansource UPS system. In flywheel UPS systems, the flywheel spins at a constant speed during normal operation; the load is provided by the mains supply. If this current flow is interrupted, the system converts the energy stored in the flywheel back into electrical energy. Once voltage is again being provided by the mains supply, both the load and the flywheel are switched back to the mains supply for recharging. What is more, this process remedies all mains interference listed in IEEE as well.

In addition to their high level of availability, flywheel-based UPS systems are also characterised by low power consumption. The decisive parameter for the energy consumption is the level of efficiency, i.e. the ratio of output to input power under defined operating conditions. It not only influences the power consumption for operating the UPS, but also generates costs for any air conditioning. Level of efficiency losses occur because all kinds of UPS systems consume a base power level, such as for the control system and charge retention. Dual converters invariably add involved conversion processes in connection with storing energy in batteries. If the load is distributed among two or more systems, then the level of efficiency drops almost directly proportional to the load, for the base requirement is independent of this. Flywheel-based UPS systems only require a low amount of power for conversion processes. The level of efficiency is 98% with optimum load conditions and does not fall below 95% even with unfavourable load conditions of 33%.

This technology field has modular UPS systems with a rated power level of 250 kVA, or 225 KW. Such parallel operation makes it possible to realise systems in the MW power range.

At new powersafe, we specialise in diesel UPS systems – i.e diesel-supported dynamic UPS systems, or no-break systems – where kinetic energy is provided long-term and without interruption.

We employ static, battery-supported UPS systems for lower power levels.
